Red rubber mulch

This is the red of a redwood trunk and of the rock around Sedona — warm, deep, and closer to the earth than to a paint chip. It is the color that reads as landscaping from the street.

Which is why it works twice. Laid along a front bed it gives a house curb appeal in a single afternoon, and laid under play equipment it lifts the equipment off the ground visually, so the structure reads as a designed space rather than a frame standing in dirt.

On the pallet

Seventy-five cubic feet to a pallet. Two ways to take it, same money: fifty bags at one and a half cubic feet apiece, or the whole pallet as one super sack.

Bags win when the mulch has to travel by hand — a bag is a manageable weight and you can stop and start. The super sack works only where a loading dock, or a forklift and a pallet jack is on site.

Depth under equipment

The cushioning comes from the depth, not from the color. A deeper bed absorbs a longer fall, and that single relationship sits behind every playground surfacing specification.

Where a site needs the fall height rating and its matching depth, those go out with the order — the documentation a school board, an insurer or a licensing inspector asks for.

In front of a house

Red is the color that most reliably makes a bed look tended. Against brick it warms; against pale siding or gray stone it does the opposite and grounds everything.

It also stays where it is put. Bark rides off in a downpour and gathers at the low end of the drive. This does not float, so a graded bed still looks graded after a storm.

How much to order

Area in square feet, times depth in feet, gives cubic feet. Three inches is a quarter of a foot, so a 300 square foot bed at three inches wants 75 cubic feet — one pallet.

Play areas are laid deeper than beds, so the same footprint takes more. The calculator will size it, or send the measurements and we will size it with you.

Season after season

It does not rot, so it does not vanish into the soil and leave you buying the same bed again every spring.

It does not crush down either. Wood chips break apart and pack flat underfoot; this compresses and comes back up.

It does drift. Under a swing, at the bottom of a slide, across the corner everyone cuts — those places thin out over time. A rake and a little topping up puts it right, and that is the whole of the maintenance.

Made from

Recycled tires, cleaned and shredded, with magnets drawing out the steel belting and air classification lifting the fabric away.
