Description

Brown rubber mulch

Brown is here to do the job wood mulch was doing, without the part where you buy it again next year. It carries the same warm, natural tone that makes a bed look settled, and it holds that tone through the seasons that would have broken wood down.

The comparison is the whole point of this color. Wood decomposes into the soil, so the layer thins and has to be replaced. It also breaks down into exactly the kind of damp organic matter that insects settle into, and it hosts a fungus that stains everything nearby. Brown rubber gives you the look without inheriting any of that.

What a pallet holds

Seventy-five cubic feet, at the same price whichever way you take it. Fifty bags of one and a half cubic feet, or a single super sack carrying the full pallet.

Choose bags for a job done by hand — one bag at a time from the driveway is manageable, and the work can be split across a weekend. Choose the super sack only where a loading dock, or a forklift and a pallet jack is already on site.

Delivery cost

None on top. Freight is folded into the figure you see, so the price on screen is what settles — no shipping line appears later.

One through seven pallets checks out here. Above seven the freight is quoted by hand, so send the quantity and delivery ZIP and we will come back with a number.

Depth where children play

Depth is what makes a surface protective. The deeper the layer, the greater the fall it can absorb, and that relationship is the basis of every playground surfacing specification.

Impact tested and certified independently. The federal handbook, which public playgrounds are held to, matches installed depth to the fall height being protected.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Public Playground Safety Handbook (Publication 325) · tested to ASTM F1292 · confirm certification in the IPEMA public certification database.

When a site needs the fall height rating and the matching depth, both travel with the order. That is the paperwork a school board, an insurer or a licensing inspector expects.

Against planting

Brown sits behind planting rather than competing with it, the way bark does. That makes it a natural fit for a traditional bed.

Where it parts company with bark is in weather. Bark floats and travels in heavy rain; this stays on the grade you raked it to, including on a slope.

Wood mulch hosts a fungus that fires hard dark specks onto siding, fences and parked cars. They are close to impossible to remove. Rubber does not host it.

Sizing the order

Multiply the area in square feet by the depth in feet. At three inches — a quarter of a foot — a 300 square foot bed comes to 75 cubic feet, which is one pallet either way you pack it.

Play areas need more depth than beds and therefore more volume for the same footprint. The calculator handles that, or send the numbers over and we will work it through.

What changes over time

Very little, which is the argument for it. There is no annual replacement because there is no decomposition.

It does not pack flat the way chips do, either. Wood settles and crumbles underfoot; this gives and recovers.

It does migrate, though. High-traffic spots thin out — swing landings, slide exits, shortcut corners. Rake it back, top up the thin patch, and that is the entire upkeep.

What it is

Recycled tires, cleaned and shredded. Magnets take the steel belting out and air classification lifts the fabric away.

Federal agencies have examined recycled tire rubber directly and published what they found.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Tire Crumb Exposure Characterization Report, with CDC/ATSDR and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
